Heritage in School Day

Heritage in School Day.

On Thursday March 7th to mark National Tree Week we had a speaker Niamh Ní Bhroinn visit the school to talk to us about native Irish trees.  She worked with all the classes and talked to us about the native trees which are growing on the school grounds.

We are lucky enough to have the following: Ash, Silver Birch, Holly, Rowan, Willow, Blackthorn, Hawthorn, and Hazel.

Niamh had brought branches from various different trees and we got to look closely at them so we might recognise them in the future.

While she was working with 5th & 6th classes she showed them how to estimate the height of a tree and also how to guess the age of a tree.

She went outside with 3rd & 4th classes and they examined the trees and shrubs growing in our yard.

When Niamh came in to Junior & Senior Infants everybody got to look closely at the branches and buds and feel the lovely soft pussy willows.

Have a look at the photos below to get an idea of how the day went.

Also Niamh could not identify this mystery tree – she will come and have another look when the leaves/blossoms grow. In the meantime if you have any idea we would love to hear from you!!
